Adams County Defendant Sentenced to 56 Years to Life for Sexually Assaulting His Biological Children

October 30, 2023

Brighton, CO — Today, District Attorney Brian Mason is announcing the 56 years to life in prison sentence for Jason Brigham, 48, following his conviction on August 18, 2023, on various charges, including Sexual Assault on a Child, at the conclusion of a five-day jury trial in Adams County District Court.

At trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Brigham sexually abused two of his children throughout the course of a 10-year period. Ultimately, an Adams County Jury convicted Brigham of Sexual Assault on a Child, Sexual Assault on a Child--Pattern of Abuse, Sexual Assault on a Child--Position of Trust, Aggravated Incest, Sexual Assault on a Child--Force, and various sentence enhancers for aggravated sex offenses, otherwise known as "Jessica's Law."

The case was originally set for trial in February 2023, but Brigham removed his GPS monitoring device at the RTD bus station in front of the courthouse and took off. The investigation into his whereabouts led investigators to a suicide note that he left for his mother. Brigham leased a camper and was headed out of the country when investigators, who had been working around the clock, arrested the defendant eight days later. He was held on a one-million-dollar bond from the date of his apprehension until conviction at trial.

On Friday, October 27, 2023, an Adams County Judge sentenced Brigham to 56 years to life in prison, 32 years to life for one victim and 24 years to life for the other victim to run consecutively. Significant law enforcement cooperation led to the conviction and sentence in this case, and special recognition is owed to the Brighton Commerce City Sex Assault Task Force and Detective Mark Michieli for their hard work.

"We typically say murder is the most serious crime we handle in the District Attorney's Office, but it's difficult to imagine a darker and more damaging offense than the sexual assault of your own child," said District Attorney Brian Mason. "My Child Victim's Unit works tirelessly to ensure justice is done in these incredibly complex and distressing cases, and I am thankful to the work of my prosecutors, investigators, and staff. I am also grateful to the Brighton Commerce City Sex Assault Task Force and all of the other law enforcement agencies that allowed us to bring this case to trial and deliver a just verdict and sentence for the victims."

Senior Deputy District Attorney Natalie Scarpella and Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Ryder led the prosecution of this case.
